Alishan National Scenic Area in Chaiyi County, Taiwan

I remember Alishan (阿里山國家風景區) from the very first weekend that I arrived in Taiwan.  It was amazingly beautiful as we traveled up the twisting mountain road towards the youth hostel near the park entrance.  Alishan is located near Taiwan's highest mountain, Yushan, which is visible on clear days.  Clear days are really the key, because daily clouds make Alishan their personal mountain retreat.  The area is famous for being a sea of clouds.  The Sea of Clouds produces unique sunrise views, comparable only to sights found from the small windows while flying.  Once you win the battle with the early alarm clock and hike to the top of the mountain, your excitement will build as the dawn draws near.  As the sun breaks over the sea of clouds to reveal mountain tips, billowing clouds, and the warm accents of the sunrise... it is hard to grasp the vast creativity of God from this heavenly vantage point.  Alishan is a must visit destination in Taiwan, whether for a weekend quite retreat or an overnight after hiking nearby Yushan, and no better illustrates Formosa as the beautiful island!
