Hualien County, Taiwan

Hualien, Taiwan is personally one of my favorite places in the WORLD!  It is hard to believe one small county can provide such a variety of different sights.  Since I particularly enjoy being in the outdoors, Hualien is a special treat… Even if you cannot leave the air conditioning for too long, the connivence that Taiwan is well know for is still available in the many B&Bs to serve you while stepping beyond your comfort zone to experience all Hualien has to offer!

Taroko Gorge is an incredible unique mountainous national park area.  The gorge is split with a small stream flowing from the high peaks of the Central Mountain Range into the Pacific Ocean and can drastically fluctuate from the rain surges of typhoons or the droughts of the hot summer.  The gorge is famous for the massive marble boulders that line the stream and high cliff walls.  Definitely one of Taiwan’s most beautiful regions, the park is also home to many of the tallest mountains and diverse climates in all of Taiwan.
After leaving the gorge region north of Hualien City and heading south into Hualien County, there are vast possibilities of scenes to explore.  Along the inner mountain highway (9), many lakes, small Aboriginal villages, and hiking trails are within a days travel from the city.  Near the coastal highway (11), the Pacific Ocean crashes into the mountains and defines ocean blue providing countless photo opportunities all the way to largest south-eastern city, Taitung.
